It has no form
But you can see it
It has no name
But you know it
It has no scent
But you can sense it
We think it silently kills
Brings misery as it wills
Casting its shadows over lonely fields
Hiding its voice in 'em mighty hills
Its presence makes all stand in stills
And that feeling, oh how it chills!
But it is not evil
For all it does is make you feel
That sense of sudden ill
Yet it never does conceal
Nor hide even a lil'
Its presence is ever revealed
Yet missing smiles we blame it steals
Accusing it robs our every zeal
The truth we kept in shadows and veils
Is our very own fear to whom we yield
A truth we will never admit is real
A truth we always defend and shield
The truth be told
We are just unbold
We want a story that will hold
A story that will never e'er get old
It does not come as a surprise
As old, familiar as it is wise
It exists whether the sun sets or rise
It is always there waiting its reprise
It sees when we cannot see
It hears our silent prayers
It toys with our every sensory
Its presence ever a mystery
But disappears it never does
It stays when light is cast
It hides itself in plain sight
Waiting silently in shades of light
But light's shadow it is not
They're more like two peas in a pod
For without one there is no other
Like old lovers they go together
For one brings out the best in the other
And illuminates their beauty none can asunder
For it is only in dark that light shines even brighter
And in light that dark seems less sinister
The light's nemesis it is not
But it is what we have always thought
For without its life
There would be no light
For how could you tell the lightness of the light
When you have not seen the darkness of the night?
